What do I need to have my own website?

Four basic items: Webmaster, Website, Domain, and Hosting.

Webmaster – is the person who creates and manages your website. Simply put, this could be you. Learn how to manage your own site.

Website – is the visual content, of one or multiple pages, that is viewed on-line by visitors. Your site is created to promote business and/or personal subjects.

Domain – is the address that is typed into a browser to direct/link a visitor to your website on a server that is hosting your site. Example of a domain address: www.ExampleDomain.Com.

Hosting – is the provider who “hosts” the website on their server. This is where the website is parked and where visitors will be able to view the website on the World Wide Web.

How much does it cost to have my own website? Who gets paid?

Webmaster – Generally a flat fee is charged to create your website and a per hour fee to maintain your website. The flat fee can vary, depending on how many items are required: pages, pictures, text, menu type, and many other factors related to the appearance of the website. You can expect to pay anywhere from $500.00* for a simple website and the cost goes upward from there (not including Hosting or the Domain name). Based upon a webmasters skills, the per hour management fee can start at about $75.00* per hour. Learn to manage your own site and not pay to have someone do the job for you - save money.

Domain – This fee depends upon which extension you choose (.com, .biz, .info, .us, etc.). The fee, per year, ranges from $10.00 to $25.00*. If the domain is not available, someone already owns it, then you could be looking at paying hundreds of dollars to secure and own that domain name.

Hosting – Your host provider can charge a per month fee or an annual fee. Normally, the more you pay in advance the more you save in the long run. If you were to pay your Hosting Company for three years of service you most likely would receive a discount. There are numerous hosting companies to select from and their fees can start at about $5.00* per month and go up. Fees depend on the types of services requested for your website.

After I have my website created and published on the Internet, do I still pay a webmaster?

You would not need to make any payments for a static site, as maintenance is not required. If you need any changes then the webmaster would need to be compensated. If you contract for a preset monthly fee with a webmaster, whether changes are required or not, you would need to make payment. Learn to manage the site yourself and save money.

Static Site – is a website that has been created and does not require any changes or updates.
